Cambridge, MN — June 2, 2025
Arrowhead Transit officially launched RideSmart 2025 on Monday morning with a celebratory event at its Cambridge operations center. The milestone marks the beginning of a full system redesign in Chisago and Isanti counties — the most ambitious rural transit overhaul in Minnesota to date.
The event brought together local leaders, community partners, and state transit advocates to recognize the collaborative work behind the project. Remarks were given by Isanti County Commissioner Bill Berg, Chisago County Administrator Chase Burnham, North Branch Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Melissa Collins, and Arrowhead Transit Assistant Director of Operations Sandra Wheelecor, who served as the project lead.

“This launch represents years of listening to our riders and responding with a plan that’s grounded in their real needs,” said Wheelecor. “RideSmart 2025 is about better access, clearer schedules, stronger connections — and most importantly, it’s about people.”
The redesigned system, which officially went into effect on June 2, includes expanded commuter routes, clearly defined Dial-A-Ride zones with extended hours, and multiple new loop routes designed to improve regional connectivity. The redesign also lays the groundwork for future app-based booking and real-time tracking technology.

Speakers emphasized that RideSmart 2025 is not just about transit — it’s about unlocking access to healthcare, employment, education, and independent living across the region.
Brandon Nurmi, Executive Director of Arrowhead Transit, put it simply: “Public transit removes barriers. There’s a lot more riding on Arrowhead Transit than just people.”
More than 68,000 riders used Arrowhead Transit services in Chisago and Isanti counties in 2024 alone — a number expected to grow as the new system takes hold. The redesign was shaped by over 100 survey responses, months of public engagement, and dozens of adjustments based on community feedback.
The launch event included a brief video overview, guided facility tours, and one-on-one interviews with key staff. Media and partners are encouraged to download high-resolution visuals, route maps, and public outreach materials at arrowheadtransit.com/public-relations.
