Back to School Safety: Keep an Eye Out for School Buses!

Arrowhead Transit and our community are excited to see students return to classrooms across Northeastern Minnesota. While the back-to-school season is filled with anticipation, it also marks an important reminder: school buses will be back on the roads, and student safety is our top priority.

Why School Bus Safety Matters

School buses are one of the safest ways for students to travel, but it takes a community effort to keep it that way. With buses transporting our most precious cargo—our children—each day, it’s crucial that drivers, parents, and community members stay vigilant.

Safety Reminders for the Community

Here are some key safety tips to keep in mind as we kick off the school year:

  1. Watch for Yellow Flashing Lights: Yellow lights indicate that a bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and be ready to stop when you see red flashing lights and the extended stop sign arm.
  2. Stop Means Stop: Minnesota law requires all vehicles to stop when the red lights on a school bus are flashing, whether you’re behind the bus or approaching from the opposite direction on undivided roads. Never attempt to pass a stopped school bus.
  3. Leave Space: Always maintain a safe distance behind buses to allow them to stop safely. Remember that school buses make frequent stops, and children can be unpredictable.
  4. Be Aware of Children Crossing: Children may not always be visible when crossing the street, especially in low light or bad weather conditions. Stay alert and be prepared to stop at all times.
  5. Slow Down in School Zones: Pay attention to speed limits in school zones and areas where buses are picking up or dropping off students. A few extra seconds of caution can prevent serious accidents.

What Parents Can Do

Parents, you play a critical role in your child’s safety. Please remind your children to:

  • Arrive at the bus stop early and stay away from the curb.
  • Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the door opens before approaching.
  • Always cross in front of the bus where the driver can see them—never behind.

Join Us in Making Safety a Priority

Let’s work together to ensure that our local students have a safe and successful school year. By staying alert and following these simple safety guidelines, we can make our roads safer for everyone. Remember, our buses are not just carrying students; they’re carrying the future of our community.

We’re looking forward to a great year ahead! For more information on school bus safety and our back-to-school initiatives, visit our website or contact us directly.
