If you’ve never used public transit before, the idea of hopping on a bus for the first time can feel a little overwhelming. What do you need to know before you board? How do you pay? Can you bring a bike? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
At Arrowhead Transit, we make it easy for first-time riders to feel comfortable and confident using our buses. Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to an appointment, or just trying out public transportation for the first time, this guide will help you navigate your ride like a pro with some simple tips for riding the bus.
Steps to a Smooth First Ride
Step 1: Planning Your Trip
First things first: where are you going? Arrowhead Transit serves 10 counties in Northeastern Minnesota with scheduled bus routes, Dial-A-Ride services, and medical transportation options.
How to Find the Right Route
- Scheduled Routes – If your area has fixed-route buses, check the schedule to see what times the bus will be near you.
- Dial-A-Ride – If your area offers Dial-A-Ride services, you’ll need to schedule a pickup in advance. It’s as easy as calling our dispatch team at 1-800-862-0175 to book your ride!
What to Tell the Dispatcher
When calling to schedule a ride, be ready to provide:
- Your name
- Your pickup location
- Your destination
- The time you need to arrive
- Any special requests (bringing a bike, luggage, child car seat, etc.)
Our friendly dispatch team is here to help make sure you get where you need to go!
Step 2: Paying for your Ride
One of the most common questions new riders have is how to pay for their ride. As part of our tips for riding the bus, we’ve broken down the different payment options to help you feel prepared and confident before you board.
We offer multiple payment options to purchase tickets to keep things convenient:
- Cash – You can pay your fare directly onboard the bus, but exact change is required (drivers do not carry change).
- Credit/Debit Card – Unfortunately, we cannot accept cards onboard. If you’d like to pay by card, you must prepay for your ride by calling 218-735-6851.
- Check – Checks can also be used for prepayment if needed.
Pro Tip: Buying a booklet of tickets in advance can save time and make boarding easier, especially if you ride often!
Step 3: Getting Ready for Your Ride
What to Bring
- Your bus fare or ticket
- A small bag or backpack – There’s space for luggage, but if you’re bringing larger items, let dispatch know when booking your ride.
- A covered drink – Beverages must be in a closed or sealed container.
No eating on board – Please enjoy your snacks or meals before boarding.
Need to bring luggage? We have room! Just let us know in advance if you’re traveling with bulky items.
Step 4: Boarding the Bus
When your bus arrives, make sure to:
- Have your fare ready – Whether it’s cash, a ticket, or a pre-arranged ride, having payment ready will speed up boarding.
- Greet your driver – Our drivers are friendly and ready to help. If you have any questions, just ask!
- Find a seat & get comfortable – If you have mobility needs or require assistance, let the driver know. We’re here to help!
Step 5: Enjoying the Ride
Once you’re on the bus, sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey! Here are a few things to keep in mind while riding:
- Be mindful of noise – If you’re listening to music or watching a video, use headphones.
- Limit phone calls – It’s fine to chat, but keep calls brief and at a low volume.
- Keep it clean – Help us keep our buses neat by taking any trash with you when you leave.
When you’re getting close to your stop, give the driver a heads-up so they can let you off at the right location.
Step 6: Arriving at Your Destination
When your stop is coming up:
- Gather your belongings
- Thank your driver! They work hard to get everyone where they need to go safely
- Exit the bus safely and enjoy your day!
Bonus Tips for Riding the Bus for the First Time
- Try a short trip first – If you’re new to public transit, take a practice ride to a familiar location to get comfortable.
- Ask questions – Our drivers and staff are here to help! If you’re unsure about anything, just ask.
Plan ahead – Check schedules and routes before you leave to make sure you know your ride options.
